Adding the theme block
The Latch block (shown as Latch in the theme editor) is a theme app extension that you add in the Shopify theme editor. It shows a lock (password field) on the storefront and, after a correct password, shows the content for that lock. Currently Latch is intended for product page descriptions—add the block on the product page where you want the gated description to appear. Support for other page types is planned.
How to enable the widget
You can enable the Latch widget in two ways:
Option 1: One-click setup (recommended)
- In the Latch app, open Setup (from the app navigation).
- Click Open theme editor and add Latch block. This opens the theme editor on your product template and adds the Latch block to the main product section.
- In the theme editor, select the Latch block in the sidebar, paste your Lock ID from the Control Center into the block settings, then click Save.
This deep link takes you straight to the right place so you don’t have to find the block manually.
Option 2: Add the block manually
- In Shopify admin go to Online Store → Themes.
- Click Customize on the theme you use.
- Open a product page (use the template dropdown or navigate to a product) so you can add the block where the product description is shown.
- In the left sidebar, find the Product information (or main product) section. Click Add block within that section.
- Under Apps, select Latch (or Latch Embed, depending on theme).
- In the block settings, paste the Lock ID from the Latch app (from Control Center → your lock).
- Save the theme.
Block settings
Lock ID
The main setting is the Lock ID. Make sure it matches exactly the ID shown in the Latch app for the lock you want. If the ID is wrong, the block may show an error or the wrong lock.
Content to Copy
This setting controls which content Latch locks when you place the block in the product section. The block doesn’t move your theme’s content—it hides the blocks that come after it and shows your lock’s content (from the app) after the password is entered. You choose how much of what follows is hidden:
- Next Element Only — Only the next block (e.g. the very next block in the section) is hidden and replaced by the unlocked content. Use this when you have a single block (like one “Description” or “Collapsible row”) that you want to gate.
- All Remaining Siblings — Every block after the Latch block in that section is hidden and replaced by the unlocked content. Use this when you want to gate everything below the block (e.g. full description, tabs, specs, and any other blocks that follow).
Tip: Place the Latch block immediately before the content you want to lock. If you only want to lock the product description, put the block right above that description block and choose Next Element Only. If you want to lock the whole area below (description + extra sections), choose All Remaining Siblings.
Where you can place it (for now)
Right now the block is designed to be used on product pages—in or near the product description area. Add it in a spot where you want the gated content to appear (e.g. below the main description or in a collapsible section). If you don’t see Latch or Latch Embed under Apps, ensure the Latch app is installed and the theme supports app blocks. We plan to support other page types (e.g. collection pages, static pages) in the future.
How it behaves on the storefront
- Before unlock: Visitors see the lock UI (e.g. lock icon and password field) where the block is placed.
- After correct password: The lock content (your gated description) is shown and stays visible for that browser session.
- After closing the browser / new session: The content is locked again; the visitor must enter the password again.
For creating the locks that you attach to this block, see Creating locks.
